The Osprey is superb fishers and indeed eat little else—fish make up some 99 percent of their diet. Because of this appetite, these birds can be found near ponds, rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways around the world. Ospreys hunt by diving to the water's surface from some 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 meters) up. They have gripping pads on their feet to help them pluck fish from the water with their curved claws and carry them for great distances. In flight, ospreys will orient the fish headfirst to ease wind resistance.

Ospreys are sometimes confused with bald eagles, but can be identified by their white underparts. Their white heads also have a distinctive black eyestripe that goes down the side of their faces. Eagles and ospreys frequent similar habitats and sometimes battle for food. Eagles often force osprey to drop fish that they have caught and steal them in midair.

Human habitat is sometimes an aid to the osprey. The birds happily build large stick-and-sod nests on telephone poles, channel markers, and other such locations. Artificial nesting platforms are common in areas where preservationists are working to reestablish the birds. North American osprey populations became endangered in the 1950s due to chemical pollutants such as DDT, which thinned their eggshells and hampered reproduction. Ospreys have rebounded significantly in recent decades, though they remain scarce in some locales.

Most ospreys are migratory birds that breed in the north and migrate south for the winter. They lay eggs (typically three), which both parents help to incubate. Osprey eggs don't hatch all at once, but are staggered in time so that some siblings are older and more dominant. When food is scarce these stronger birds may take it all and leave their siblings to starve. The feathers on this particular raptor are ruffled so they look full and not laying down on the body. They roam African savanna and desert lands and get most of their water from the plants they eat.Though they cannot fly, ostriches are fleet, strong runners. They can sprint up to 43 miles (70 kilometers) an hour and run over distance at 31 miles (50 kilometers) an hour. They may use their wings as "rudders" to help them change direction while running. An ostrich's powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet (3 to 5 meters) in a single stride. These legs can also be formidable weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or a potential predator like a lion. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.Ostriches live in small herds that typically contain less than a dozen birds. Alpha males maintain these herds, and mate with the group's dominant hen. The male sometimes mates with others in the group, and wandering males may also mate with lesser hens. All of the group's hens place their eggs in the dominant hen's nest—though her own are given the prominent center place. The dominant hen and male take turns incubating the giant eggs, each one of which weighs as much as two dozen chicken eggs.

Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. The old saw probably originates with one of the bird's defensive behaviors. At the approach of trouble, ostriches will lie low and press their long necks to the ground in an attempt to become less visible. Their plumage blends well with sandy soil and, from a distance, gives the appearance that they have buried their heads in the sand.

Ostriches typically eat plants, roots, and seeds but will also eat insects, lizards, or other creatures available in their sometimes harsh habitat. The social structure of the Ostrich is very complex so it is also very interesting to examine. For parts of the year the Ostrich will live alone or as a pair. Those pairs can be the same gender or the opposite gender. It isn’t really known how they decide who they will pair off with.During mating season which lasts for several months and for the eggs to hatch though they are in a group called a herd. The social structure during this period of time is very interesting. They are nomadic which means that they will move around looking for food, water, and shelter. The herds can range from 5 members or be as large as 50 members. It all depends on the location and the availability of what they need for overall survival. There is dominant male in each herd that is responsible for where they will stay, where they will move, and where they will eat. He is also the one that decides who can join the herd and who can’t. He will mainly want adult females to be in that group so that he can mate with the dominant female. However, there can be some younger males in the group as long as they don’t try to mate with that dominant female.

Some of them are able to live in the coldest parts of the world. Others live very close to the equator where it is quite warm. All penguins though reside within the Southern hemisphere. They are found on every single island there. Some penguins live on thick sheets of ice most of the time due to the extremely cold weather. Others live on sandy beaches and small islands.

All penguins have to live close to a body of water where they can hunt for food. They need plenty of fish, krill, squid, and crustaceans to be able to survive. This is why they mainly live close to cold water currents. These currents are able to pull a great deal of these types of foods to the surface for them. That is why they are often found along the coastal regions of South America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The Penguin is a smallest species of penguin in the world . However, the design of the body serves them very well when it comes to being quite agile in the water. Their bright pink color and wading ways makes them stand apart from the some 10,000 different species of birds in the entire world. They are truly a special group of birds with six different species, all having their own unique characteristics. Only some of these species are found in the United States. These famous pink birds can be found in warm, watery regions on many continents. They favor environments like estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes. Considering their appearance, flamingos are surprisingly fluid swimmers, but really thrive on the extensive mud flats where they breed and feed.

Greater flamingos are likely to be the only tall, pink bird in any given locale. They also have long, lean, curved necks and black-tipped bills with a distinctive downward bend.Their bent bills allow them to feed on small organisms-plankton, tiny fish, fly larvae, and the like. In muddy flats or shallow water, they use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the bottom. They then bury their bills, or even their entire heads, and suck up both mud and water to access the tasty morsels within. A flamingo's beak has a filterlike structure to remove food from the water before the liquid is expelled.

Shrimplike crustaceans are responsible for the flamingo's pink color. The birds pale in captivity unless their diet is supplemented.Greater flamingos live and feed in groups called flocks or colonies. They find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Greater flamingos also breed while gathered in groups. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg. Young flamingos are born gray and white and do not turn pink for two years. In years when wetlands and pools are dry and food scarce, flamingoes may not breed. The American Flamingo, also known as the Caribbean Flamingo, is related closely to the Greater Flamingo and the Chilean Flamingo. Although the American Flamingo is generally smaller than the Greater Flamingo, it is the largest flamingo breed naturally found in the Americas. Their maximum height is around 55 inches. Females can weigh upwards of 5 lbs. and males can reach 6 lbs.

This type of flamingo naturally inhabits the Galapagos islands, Cuba, Columbia, Venezuela and other close islands since it prefers lagoons and inland lakes. Although it’s true, the birds have also been spotted in southern Mexico, the Everglades and other locations in Florida that match their preferences as well. They are good swimmers are often travel in flocks.

The term "peacock" is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl.Suitable males may gather harems of several females, each of which will lay three to five eggs. In fact, wild peafowl often roost in forest trees and gather in groups called parties.

Peacocks are ground-feeders that eat insects, plants, and small creatures. There are two familiar peacock species. The blue peacock lives in India and Sri Lanka, while the green peacock is found in Java and Myanmar (Burma). A more distinct and little-known species, the Congo peacock, inhabits African rain forests.

Peafowl such as the blue peacock have been admired by humans and kept as pets for thousands of years. Selective breeding has created some unusual color combinations, but wild birds are themselves bursting with vibrant hues. They can be testy and do not mix well with other domestic birds.

The Peacock is found in many locations including Burma, Indian, and Sri Lanka. They tend to live in locations that offer them access to low trees and plants. They also live in regions where they have access to farm grounds for feeding as well. They tend to do better in warmer regions but they can survive in cooler temperatures.

Parrots have captivated man since the great ancient civilizations. Their grandeur, their charming personalities, and their vocal abilities have made them quite popular. In the wild, there is nothing more magnificent than observing wild flocks of parrots congregating. Their social structures, their display of affection, and their boisterous personalities are downright captivating. But what exactly is a parrot? Simply put, parrots are birds that share characteristics such as colorful plumage, hooked beaks, and two toes facing forward and two toes facing backwards.
There are many bird species; however, there are roughly over 350 species of parrots throughout the world. These birds come in all sizes from the small fig parrot and budgie, all the way to the larger species such as the macaws or cockatoos.
That being said, ParrotFeather.com is a site dedicated to bringing bird enthusiasts up-to-date information on parrot keeping. We strive to bring the most current information about pet parrots to ensure these birds live a happy and healthy life in your home. It’s no secret that these creatures are complex, intelligent, emotional, and complicated beings. We hope this site will give you a guided path should you run into problems with your parrot such as feather plucking, excessive screaming, or bird training. Also, if you’re doing research about parrot species in general, or looking to start breeding, then you’ve stumbled upon the right site.

There are thought to be over 350 species of parrot worldwide, ranging across rainforest regions of the Southern Hemisphere. The parrot tends to inhabit densely forested areas, where the parrot hunts insects and small mammals, as well as eating nuts, seeds and fruits.

The parrot can grow between 8cm and 1m, depending on the parrot species. The pygmy parrot is the smallest species of parrot in the world, growing to around the same size as an adult human's finger. The pygmy parrot is found in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest species of parrot in the world, growing to more than a meter in height and native to the jungles of central and eastern South America. However, the endangered kakapo of New Zealand can often be heavier than the Hyacinth Macaw, with thekakapo often reaching more than 3kg in weight.

The parrot is believed to be one of the most intelligent of all the bird species, mainly in the sense that parrots are able to replicate (mimic) the noises made around them. Some parrots are able to mimic modern sounds and human voices to almost perfection. One African grey parrot was found to have a vocabulary of more than 800 words!

Nearly all of the different parrot species around the world are known to live for a long time, particularly in comparison to other species of bird (even other species of animal). The average lifespan of the parrot is around 60 years although it is not uncommon for parrots to be much older ages, as many parrot individuals have reached the age of 100.

Parrots are identifiable by a number of their features, the brightly coloured feathers of the parrot being the most obvious one. Parrots are known to have sharp, curved beaks which help parrots to crack nuts open more easily and to access fruits on the trees. Parrots also have strong legs, but are most well known for the fact that there are four toes on each of the parrot's two feet, two of these toes face forwards and the other two toes face backwards. These remarkable feet help the parrot not only to perch on tree branches more easily but also aid the parrot in climbing tree trunks or clambering through the dense jungle foliage.

Parrot populations are rapidly declining mainly due to deforestation and therefore destruction of the parrot's natural habitat. Parrots are also a popular animal in the exotic pet trade and are trapped in the wild to be delivered to homes around the world.

Due to their large size (of the majority of parrot species) and intelligence, parrots have few natural predators in the wild. The human trapping and hunting parrots, is the mainpredator of the parrot along with monkeys, snakes and large birds of prey that tend to feed more on the eggs of the parrot rather than the bird itself.
